Acoustic Monitoring 101 for Students
GBC’s hands-on introduction to the world of wildlife acoustics for new and early-career researchers. Join us remotely on May 5, 2026 from 10 am ET - 2 pm ET! Participants will learn how to set up acoustic detectors, record wildlife calls, and analyze sound data to monitor local animal populations.

Bats of the Northeast @ the New York Botanical Gardens
Analyze the biology, behavior, and ecology of local bat species through a combination of indoor study and guided fieldwork. You'll develop skills in observing, identifying, and documenting bats using both visual cues and acoustic monitoring techniques. Through hands-on sessions, you'll be introduced to recording and analyzing echolocation calls, and interpreting bat activity patterns to better understand how these winged mammals navigate within urban ecosystems.
By the end of the course, you'll be equipped with practical field and analytical techniques to conduct presence/absence surveys, assess conservation considerations, and contribute meaningfully to ongoing research, citizen science efforts, and local stewardship initiatives across New York City.Meets every week on Tuesday, starting on 05/05/26 and ending on 05/26/26

Foundations in Bat Acoustics: Field and Lab Experience
Gain a complete introduction to the science of bat acoustics through this multi-part training series designed for students, and early-career researchers seeking experience in survey design and implementation. Participants will explore the full process of acoustic monitoring, from learning core concepts in a virtual classroom to conducting hands-on fieldwork and analyzing real recordings in the lab. Each participant will receive an EchoMeter Touch ultrasonic microphone as a part of the workshop fee to continue monitoring in the field!
By the end of the program, attendees will understand how to design, deploy, and interpret acoustic surveys that contribute to bat conservation and research efforts. Seats are limited!
This workshop will take place May 14-16, 2026 from 6 pm ET - 9 pm ET each evening.
