Ways You Can Help Bats

  • Turn off the Lights

Leaving on lights at night contributes to light pollution. This can deter bats from entering an area at night. By turning off unnecessary lights you can provide the ideal environment for bats to visit and set up shop!

  • Gardening for Bats

Do you have a garden or the space to add one? By planting native plants that attract a variety of nighttime insects, like moths, you can provide a food source for bats, expand their range, and enhance their habitats. Visit our Bat Gardens page for plant suggestions and management practices.

  • 86 the Pesticides

Bats can consume up to 1,000 insects in just one hour! This includes a variety of pest species of which bats are the primary population controllers.

  • Bat Houses

By adding bat houses as supplemental shelter to your property, you are inviting bats to set up shop in an area you can help protect. They should be placed in natural clearings approximately 10-20 feet high where they can receive between 6-8 hours of sunlight daily.

  • Support Habitat

Bats will roost in both dead, and dying trees. You can support bats by providing these natural habitats they need by allowing them to remain where they will not become hazardous.

  • Talk About Bats

Talk about all the reasons that you love bats and why they are important to you and to all of us. Help spread the word, getting more people involved in Gotham Bat Conservancy’s efforts in bat conservation!
